Guide for selection of marine water pumps

 一、Types of Bulch Pumps

Bulch pumps are primarily used to discharge sludge accumulated in the bilge. Based on their application and design:

1.Centrifugal Bulch Pump:Uses centrifugal force to pump water out of the bilge.

Advantages:Simple structure, easy maintenance, suitable for most ships.

2.Rotary Bulch Pump:Uses rotating impellers to pump water out of the bilge.

Advantages:Larger flow rate and lower head, suitable for ships with high-volume drainage.

3.Diaphragm Bulch Pump:Does not require submersion in water to operate, excels at upward pumping.

Advantages:Installed above the bilge, easy to maintain and repair. Suitable for small and medium-sized ships.

    二、Bulch Pump Selection Calculation

The following describes how to perform pump selection calculations and choose a suitable marine bilge pump.

        1. Estimated Flow Rate

Estimate the required flow rate per second based on the pipe diameter and the application of water usage. This is usually expressed in cubic meters per hour (m³/h). Before performing pump selection calculations, the required flow rate needs to be determined.

        2. Head Determination

     Based on factors such as pipe bends, water level differences, material properties, and friction, determine the head (capacity) required to overcome the water level difference, usually expressed in meters (m).

        3. Power Calculation

     Based on the required water flow rate, water density, and head, calculate the power output of the pump. Power is the energy generated by the pump, usually expressed in kilowatts (kW).

Pump Power Calculation Formula:

P = (Q×H×SG) ÷(η×3670)

Where, P = Pump power (kW);

Q = Pump flow rate (m³/h); H = Pump head (mwc);

SG = Medium weight (kg/m³);

η= Pump efficiency (%);

3670 = Fixed coefficient

        4.Pump Selection Parameters

Based on flow rate, head, and power, calculate various pump parameters.

These typically include rated flow rate, rated head, and rated power.

         5.Select the Appropriate Pump Type and Brand

Choose the appropriate pump type based on power, flow rate, and head.

Additionally, consider factors such as service life, ease of maintenance, and price.

   三、What are the Rules for Bulch Pump Layout?

1.Reasonable Layout:Shipboard pumps should be distributed throughout the bilge to ensure even drainage of accumulated water and sewage.

2.Appropriate Height: Bulch pumps should not be placed too high, as this can lead to excessive air intake and impair drainage; too low a placement will increase pipe friction resistance and reduce efficiency.

3.Maintain Distance:The distance between pumps should be approximately 40-50 meters for easy maintenance.

4. Backup Pump:A backup pump should be provided in case of unforeseen circumstances.

In summary,bilge pump installation must follow certain principles and precautions to ensure safety and performance. For specific installation details, please refer to the bilge pump user manual. Furthermore, bilge pumps should be inspected and maintained before voyage to ensure normal operation and drainage performance.

   四、Determining the Size of Bulch Pumps

The specifications and dimensions of a water pump are primarily determined by its inlet and outlet diameters. Other factors to consider include the pump body's length, width, and height. These parameters vary depending on the brand and model.

For example:

1000 gallons/hour bilge pump:Suitable for medium-sized vessels with moderate displacement.

2000 gallons/hour bilge pump:Suitable for larger vessels with higher flow rates or high drainage requirements.

Selection Recommendations

The vessel's hull volume and water accumulation rate significantly impact the pump's pumping capacity. For smaller vessels, a bilge pump of around 500 gallons/hour is recommended, while larger vessels or those requiring high drainage can opt for 1000 gallons/hour or higher. Additionally, pipeline friction resistance and water level differences should be considered to limit flow rate.
